Sharing Our Story

Society is built off the collective perspectives, stories, and experiences of everyone in the community. However many news outlets and media choose to focus on a single narrative instead of opening a platform for many voices to be heard.

With Global Voice I hope to create a place in which people can share the different experiences they have gone through, hopefully allowing others to empathize and connect with them opposed to using the judgmental mindset we often tend to take when we base groups off common stereotypes.

Importance

Stereotypes and single narratives affect how we interact with one another. It is easy to think of others as simply the background characters to the life we are living, but these individual people have their own interests, their own lives, their own feelings, and emotions.

Even if we think certain issues do not affect us, it is important to note that this does not mean they do not matter.

Vision

By encouraging sharing individual perspectives, we are on the road to reconciliation.

Spreading unbiased current events to others who may not be aware of them is crucial, as knowledge of an issue is the only way we can take action to resolve them. Only if people are aware can they brainstorm ideas, and these ideas have the potential to create positive change.

The overall mission of this project is for there to be an increase in representation and empathy.

Founder

Ishika Linoj Kumar

Hi I am Ishika Linoj Kumar. I am 16 years old and go to Fleetwood Park Secondary School. I came up with this project as part of an initiative to have a positive impact on my community. I felt how the isolation everyone experienced during the Covid pandemic had an impact on how we developed relationships. It became harder to talk to one another, and easier to judge others before we got to know them. I want to bridge that gap between people and encourage listening, empathy and being involved with the various social issues that affect people around the globe.

Mannat Jamarai

Hi everyone! My name is Mannat Jamarai and I am a grade 11 student at Fleetwood Park Secondary School. I am passionate about martial arts and any and all creative outlets such as painting, writing etc. I love film, music, literature, and the outdoors and believe they are the key to a vibrant world. I’m super excited for the opportunity to be apart of this initiative and use our platform to magnify the experiences of those who may not have a pedestal to speak on in our society. I hope that our initiative increases empathy, understanding, and kindness within our community!

Hi I’m Jaya Cheema. I’m in grade 11 and attend Fleetwood Park Secondary. I decided to take part in Global Voice as a way to provide stronger community connections and to give people a place to share ideas that need to be heard. Project Global voice is useful in todays society as we all live in our own little bubbles and have grown apart from one and another especially after the pandemic. I as well as everyone else involved in Global voice believe in the importance of connecting with those around you and how it can positively benefit not just yourself but everyone. Hello! My name is Anisha Prahallad and I am also in grade 11 at Fleetwood Park Secondary. I love to learn about history, languages and science and how they all work together in our world today. Being a part of this initiative will enable super interesting conversations about all these topics while gaining unique perspectives. In a connected, yet disconnected world, having a safe platform to discuss about numerous topics is essential to developing empathy and growing a person’s outlook of society.

Hello! My name is Arpita Bargi and I’m in grade 11 at Fleetwood Park secondary. Some of my hobbies include skating and dance! Fun fact: I went to singing lessons for almost 9 years! I joined in on this project because I think it’s crucial that we get the perspectives of individuals who have gone through the specific experience. If we can gather the insights of these people, we can further connect than dismissing it as a random incident on the news. I believe it will teach us to see that there is Education is important.

Anwesha Bordoloi

Hiii!! My name is Anwesha Shreyam Bordoloi and I’m an eleventh-grade student at Fleetwood Park Secondary! I love to travel and some of my hobbies are baking and making any and all types of art! A fun fact about me is that I am quite literally obsessed with everything and anything to do with outer space and would probably prefer to live on a rocket ship. The reason why I’m interested in this project is simple, I wish to be an advocate for change. With the rise of conflicts and other deeply rooted problems in our world it’s easy to feel as if there is little that can be done. This, however, is the opposite. Even the smallest actions can make the biggest impacts, which is why it is so important to share others’ stories, their perspectives and views so they can serve as powerful tools for raising awareness and mobilizing others to take action to combat prejudice and inequality!

Hi everyone! My name is Maya Bains. I am a grade 11 student at Fleetwood Park. I am super excited and proud to be a part of Ishika’s project. She is amazing and I know Global Voice will do great things. A little bit about me is that I love Dr. Pepper. It is lowkey an addiction and I love discovering new music, artists, and genres. I wanted to be a part of this initiative because I really believe in the message. There really is a lack of empathy right now in our world, but I believe that this absence is temporary and through Global Voice we can really grows peoples understanding of social issues and the world.

Hello! My names is Sasha Ito and I am in 10th Grade at Fleetwood Secondary School. My interests are philosophy, literature, and art and my favourite animal is sharks! I lived abroad for a few years, I went to school on a small island in Japan, an international school in Osaka, and grew up in the Okanagan, these experiences made me want to learn about different peoples lives and perspectives. I’ve moved eleven times in the last four years and have met many people during that time. I joined Global Voice because I seek to give voice to minorities in communities and learn from their stories. I want to learn, listen, and get involved. I want to participate as a researcher and learn how to write articles and interview others. I hope that we help deepen your understanding of the world around you in a meaningful and educational way.

Hello everyone, my name is Japleen Kaur, and I am a grade 10 student at Fleetwood park secondary school. I love art, reading and hanging out with my family and friends. I also like trying out different foods. And my favorite subject is English!

I have lived overseas for a lot of years. I am from Delhi, India and went to school there for a most of my school years. I also love meeting new people.
